Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lump crab meat (picked over for shells)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (plus extra for garnish)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red bell pepper
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley (plus extra for garnish)
  • Optional Topping:
    • 1/4 cup plain breadcrumbs
    • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Baking Dish:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). This ensures the oven is at the correct temperature for even baking, preventing uneven cooking.
    • Lightly grease a baking dish or individual ramekins, depending on your preferred presentation. This prevents sticking and makes cleanup easier, ensuring a smooth process.
  • Prepare the Crab Mixture:

    • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, beaten egg, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, Old Bay seasoning, paprika, salt, and black pepper until smooth. This creates the creamy base for the crab mixture, ensuring a harmonious blend of flavors.
    • Gently fold the lump crab meat into the mayonnaise mixture, being careful not to break up the crab too much. This ensures the crab meat remains in large, succulent pieces, maintaining its texture.
    • Add the finely diced red bell pepper and parsley, stirring lightly to combine. This adds texture and fresh flavor to the mixture, enhancing the overall taste.
  • Assemble the Dish:

    • Transfer the crab mixture to the prepared baking dish or divide it evenly among ramekins. This ensures even cooking and portion control, preventing overcrowding.
    • If desired, mix the breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle them over the top for a golden, crispy finish. This adds a crunchy topping to the dish, enhancing the texture.
  • Bake the Crab Imperial:

    • Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the mixture is bubbly and the top is lightly browned. The time may vary depending on the size of your baking dish or ramekins.
    • Ensure the crab mixture is heated through and the topping is golden brown, preventing undercooking.
  • Garnish and Serve:

    • Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. This allows the crab mixture to set slightly, ensuring a firm texture.
    • Sprinkle with additional paprika and fresh parsley before serving. This adds a pop of color and fresh flavor, enhancing the visual appeal.
    • Enjoy warm with crackers, crusty bread, or alongside a fresh salad. This provides various serving options, catering to different preferences.

Notes

  • Drain excess liquid from crab meat.
  • Mix breadcrumbs with enough butter for crispy topping.
  • Use a water bath for even cooking.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning before baking.
