However, when you add salted caramel and rich milk chocolate, you elevate this nostalgic treat to a whole new level. Salted Caramel Rice Krispie Treats are an indulgent and irresistible dessert that combines the crunch of crispy rice cereal with the smooth, buttery caramel sauce and a touch of sea salt for contrast. Whether you’re preparing a treat for a family gathering, a birthday party, or simply satisfying your sweet tooth, these salted caramel versions of the classic Rice Krispie Treats will have everyone reaching for seconds.

Ingredients

  • Butter (10 tbsp total) – Butter adds richness to both the Rice Krispie mixture and the caramel sauce. It helps achieve the perfect texture in both layers, making them soft and gooey.
  • Marshmallows (10 ounces) – These are essential for binding the Rice Krispie Treats together. The marshmallows melt into a sweet, gooey mixture that coats the rice cereal, giving the treat its signature chewiness.
  • Rice Krispie Cereal (5 cups) – The base of this treat, these crispy rice puffs bring a delightful crunch and a light texture to the recipe, providing a perfect balance to the caramel and chocolate layers.
  • Vanilla (1 tsp) – Adds a depth of flavor to the marshmallow mixture, contributing a subtle warmth that complements the sweetness of the caramel and chocolate.
  • Caramels or Caramel Bites (10 ounces) – The main ingredient for the caramel sauce, providing that signature sweet and buttery caramel flavor that contrasts beautifully with the salt.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk (1 can, 14 ounces) – A crucial ingredient in the caramel sauce, it gives the caramel a smooth, creamy texture and adds to the overall sweetness.
  • Heavy Cream (1/2 cup) – Used in the milk chocolate drizzle, the heavy cream helps create a smooth, silky consistency for the chocolate topping.
  • Milk Chocolate Chips (6 ounces) – These chips melt beautifully into the cream, creating a rich and velvety chocolate sauce that perfectly complements the salted caramel layer.
  • Sea Salt – The crowning touch! Sprinkling sea salt over the finished treat enhances the caramel’s sweetness and balances the richness of the chocolate. It’s the perfect finishing touch that takes this dessert from good to great.

Instructions

  • Prepare the Baking Dish: Start by greasing a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter. This ensures that the treats won’t stick and makes it easier to remove them later. Set aside.
  • Making the Marshmallow Mixture: In a large saucepan, melt 5 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Once the butter begins to melt, add the marshmallows and stir continuously until they’re completely melted and smooth. Once the mixture is melted, remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Combine Rice Krispies with Marshmallow Mixture: Pour the marshmallow mixture over 5 cups of Rice Krispies in a large bowl. Stir everything together until all the cereal is well-coated. Once combined, pour the mixture into the prepared 9×13 dish. Use a spatula or your hands (dusted with a bit of butter) to press the mixture down into an even layer. Set aside to cool while you prepare the caramel layer.
  • Prepare the Salted Caramel Sauce: In a separate saucepan, add the sweetened condensed milk, 5 tablespoons of butter, and the unwrapped caramels. Heat this mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until the caramels have completely melted and the sauce is smooth. Once melted, remove from heat and pour the caramel sauce evenly over the Rice Krispie layer. Spread it out gently to ensure it covers the entire surface.
  • Add Sea Salt: While the caramel is still warm, sprinkle a pinch of sea salt over the top. The sea salt adds a savory contrast to the sweetness of the caramel and brings out its rich flavor. Let this layer set for about 15 minutes, allowing the caramel to cool slightly.
  • Prepare the Milk Chocolate Drizzle: In another saucepan, heat 1/2 cup of heavy cream until it just begins to boil. Once hot, pour the cream over the 6 ounces of milk chocolate chips in a small bowl. Stir the mixture slowly, adding the cream a tablespoon at a time until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Let it cool for a few minutes.
  • Drizzle the Chocolate: Once the caramel layer has set and cooled slightly, drizzle the melted milk chocolate over the caramel layer. Use a spoon or a piping bag for more precision. You can drizzle it in an artful zigzag pattern or simply spread it evenly.
  • Add More Sea Salt: To finish, sprinkle a bit more sea salt on top of the chocolate drizzle. This not only enhances the flavor but also gives the treats a professional touch.
  • Let Cool and Serve: Allow the treats to cool completely, at least 30-45 minutes, or until the chocolate has set. Once cooled, slice into 12 generous squares or rectangles. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Freshness is Key: Be sure to use fresh marshmallows for the best texture and flavor. Stale marshmallows may not melt as smoothly and could result in a less-than-perfect consistency.
  • Use High-Quality Chocolate: The milk chocolate drizzle can make a big difference in flavor. Using high-quality chocolate chips will result in a smoother, richer topping.
  • Make it Ahead: These Salted Caramel Rice Krispie Treats can be made ahead of time. Simply store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4-5 days. If you need to store them longer, freeze them (without the glaze) for up to 3 months. When ready to serve, drizzle the chocolate and sea salt just before serving.
  • Customize Your Flavors: Feel free to customize the treat by adding other mix-ins. Try crushed nuts (pecans or walnuts work well) or mini marshmallows for extra texture and flavor. You can even substitute dark chocolate for a more intense chocolate experience.
